Danskin Women’s Triathlon Kicks-Off its 19th Season with a Magical Return to Orlando

danskin_logo.gifNew York, NY- May 11, 2008- The Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series, the largest and longest running women’s multi sport event embarked on its 19th season today by returning to Orlando, Florida for the 9th year. Today also marked the 3rd straight year the series started on Mother’s Day at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL

Race winner Krystal Bemman, from Winter Haven, FL finished with a time of 48:05, beating second place finisher Leeann Nawrocki of Gainesville, FL, who finished in 51:31. Courtney Wagner from Oviedo, FL finished third with a time 52:28, while Brooke Holt of Lake Mary, FL crossed the finish line at 53:31 to capture fourth and Jenny Miner of Sanford, FL took fifth with her time of 53:47. Dana Bailey and Kathy Schwerdfedger both of Deland, FL placed sixth and seventh with times of 54:06 and 54:22 respectively. Rounding out the top-ten were Nicole Geller of Tampa, FL, Kimberly Boere from Almonte Springs, FL and Amy Badger of Orlando, FL who all finished the race in under 56 minutes.

“There is no better place to start the 2008 Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series than in Florida, on Mother’s Day,” said Maggie Sullivan, Danskin Triathlon Series Director. “The WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort was the perfect backdrop as over 1300 inspirational women navigated their way through the Magic Kingdom to launch our 19th season.”

The Danskin Women’s Triathlon/Orlando Race and Expo was held around the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. The Expo was conducted at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The Race took place on Sunday morning with a start time of 6 am with distances at this Race consisting of: ¼ mile swim, 9 mile bicycle ride and 2 mile run/walk that winds through Disney’s majestic Magic Kingdom. Additionally, special Disney guest Minnie Mouse served as honorary starter.

The Danskin Series is a combination .75 kilometer (half-mile) swim, 20 kilometer (12.5 mile) bicycle ride and 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) run. It has become a fixture in women’s competitive and multi-sport events with over 108 races and more than 188,000 participants to date. Women of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and athletic ability compete in these triathlons where “finishing is winning.”

“Registration for the Orlando race closed in record time this year,” said Sullivan. “It’s been amazing to see so many women embrace this event and come back year after year.”

Danskin Series veteran and Spokeswoman Sally Edwards has taken part in every Race since the Series inception in 1990. She will race in each event this Season, finishing last, ensuring that no participant is last. Sally has competed in sixteen Ironman distance triathlons and holds the Ironman Master’s world record.

The Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series is open to females, aged 14 and up. Participants elect to do the Race individually (Age Group Category - 5 year increments), or as part of a Relay Team (2 or 3 women completing the 3 segments). There is even a Mixed Age Group category that allows for women to do the Race with friends or family members!

The Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series works closely with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to raise both funds and awareness for breast cancer. Triumph Apparel Corporation (owner of the Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series) will donate five percent of all entry fees received to this outstanding organization. In addition to this corporate donation, 100% of funds raised by participants through the Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series Pledge Program will be directed to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the National Association of Team Survivor, a non profit 501(c)3 organization that provides free group exercise, health education classes and support programs for women who have a present or past diagnosis of cancer.

Danskin Team Survivor, one of the Series’ primary collateral programs, in its 14th year - is a program devoted to women in all stages of cancer treatment, recovery and survivorship with specific training programs tailored to fit the needs of these individuals.
