One of Florida's most unusual 5K trail race, in that it is
clothing optional, benefits one of Jacksonville's most caring
and loving nonprofit organizations,
G.R.E.A.T. (Golden
Retriever Emergency Assistance Team) Rescue of NE
Florida, Inc., whose mission is to find homes for misplaced
and abused golden retrievers in the greater Jacksonville
area.
If you are asking how a 5K clothing optional race became
associated with an adoption agency for wayward dogs, the
answer is quite simple. Billie Hatten, the owner of Hidden
River Resort, for several years has been a foster parent for
a number of golden retrievers.
"We started the Hidden River 5K Streak several years ago
as part of our Nudie Blues weekend event", said Billie
Hatten. "One of my guest commented on the growing popularity
of nude races in other naturist parks and said that our park
was ideal for an authentic nude race, a streak if you
will"
Billie added, "Then when I was asked what organization I
would like see benefit from the race, my response was quite
easy. I wanted to help an organization that I have been
involved with for many years in helping abandon and neglected
dogs, G.R.E.A.T. Rescue of NE Florida."
On Saturday, April 26th at10:00 am, the 4th Annual Hidden
River 5K Streak will take place at Hidden River Resort, which
is located 15 miles north of Mccleany, Florida near the
community of Moniac, Georgia. The 5K trail run is a predicted
timed event that uses nature trails, old forest roads and a
couple of cat walks on the 88 acre secluded park. The trail
route even gives the runners an occasional glimpse of the
picturesque St. Marys River.
"In the past we have usually gotten a couple dozen
runners, some who are here for the Nudie Blues event and some
just out for the race" Billie added. "But we would really
love to see more people coming out and trying something that
they may never have tried before, or may they wished they had
tried in an earlier life, and that is to go streaking."
When asked if all runners are really run in the buff when
running, Billie commented "Yes, mostly, but really the
runners can where any amount of clothes they feel comfortable
in while running." However she quickly added, "This is a
unique two for one deal for people, a chance to do something
outrageous and fun, while at the same help some beautiful
animals".
